Ok, I’m glad you’re willing to talk about this; I’d like to resolve this without any animosity between us. Perhaps I should explain why I make such a request; I make it because I believe that all artists who contribute to a piece of artwork should be given credit for it in a way that will last. A footnote in a comment is physically separate from the artwork – and thus, if you decide to display that art somewhere else, or someone saves it to their hard-drive, then there is no guarantee that you will again give credit to the people who made your artwork possible, or that the person who downloaded it will know what artists worked to bring them that image. But if the names of all those involved are on the work itself, then they can
never be separated from it, as long as it remains whole. When I make art, I put a great deal of time and energy into it. When I give it away, like I do with my stock account, I ask only that my name – my pseudonym – be included on art that uses my work, so that my contribution will always be remembered as
my contribution. This is not selfish – this is fair. For me, as an artist, this is a deep moral conviction. I extend this courtesy to other artists whenever I use their work (
see for yourself.), and I only ask that it be shown to me in return.
I can see that you intended to do no wrong, and that you are not out for spite. Indeed, I like how you used my work – the finished product is very pleasing, and it would be a shame to waste it. But I cannot back down from my convictions, which are also founded in law. One solution would be to sign that piece along the border, and include the names of all those who contributed to it. This can be done minimally, without detracting from the piece. It would give you and all those who made your art possible credit for the work, as long as it remains intact. In the end, the choice is yours, and I will not judge you for it. But I must be true to my convictions and rights. The 48-hour offer still stands, please think about it.
